Dr. Michał Sopiński, prof. AWS – Doctor of Legal Sciences and academic teacher.

Since March 24, 2023, he has been serving as the Rector-Commandant of the University of Justice. He is a university professor at the Institute of Legal Sciences of the University of Justice and a university professor at the Mikołaj Kopernik University School. He was a Visiting Research Fellow at Princeton University (USA) within the James Madison Program.

His scientific output includes several dozen publications and scientific studies, including four authored monographs.

His main areas of research interest are constitutionalism, philosophy and theory of law, human rights, penitentiary systems, the axiology of law, and political-legal doctrines.

He is a graduate of law from the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw (2017), French Philology as part of the Interdepartmental Individual Studies in the Humanities at the University of Warsaw (2016), and a year of legal studies at Université Paris-Descartes (2017). He is also a graduate of the University of Poitiers in European Business Law (Droit français et européen des affaires), where he obtained a Master 2 degree in 2018, equivalent to a Polish Master’s degree. He is a multiple scholarship recipient from the Minister of Science and Higher Education and the Rector of the University of Warsaw for scientific achievements. Laureate of the Diamond Grant for outstanding young scientists awarded by the Minister of Science and Higher Education in 2016. He defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “The Solidarist Vision of Law and the State in the Thought of Léon Duguit,” written under the supervision of Prof. Tomasz Stawecki, in 2022 at the University of Warsaw. The Discipline Council of Legal Sciences of the University of Warsaw awarded him the degree of Doctor of Legal Sciences with distinction by resolution of May 23, 2022.

In 2023, he received a scholarship for outstanding young scientists from the Minister of Science and Higher Education. He has led or co-led numerous scientific projects funded by national, Norwegian, and European sources. In 2024, he obtained a Zawacka NAWA scholarship from the National Agency for Academic Exchange for a research internship abroad at New Bulgarian University. He also completed a research internship abroad at Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University. He serves as the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal “Law • Education • Security”.

He has worked, among other places, at the Institute of Justice, the Supreme Court, and the Ministry of Justice. From 2021 to 2022, he served as Chairman of the Council for Free Legal Aid, Citizens’ Advice, and Legal Education.
