Bartosz Kułan PhD

In 2012, he graduated with honours in history (Jan Kochanowski University of Kielce) and law (Lipinski Economy and Law High School in Kielce). In 2017, he obtained the degree of PhD in History. He was repeatedly awarded research scholarships at both graduate universities. His first book on the rebellion in the Prison at Łysa Góra was awarded a distinction in the national competition for the best historical debut of the year organised by the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of National Remembrance. Participant of national and international scientific conferences. His research interests include the history of the prison system, with particular reference to the penitentiary system of the Second Polish Republic, and the history of penal and penitentiary law. The research topics undertaken so far include issues related to the history of prisons, the fate of inmates, officers and people who created the interwar penitentiary system. In addition to topics concerning the prison system of the Second Polish Republic, Bartosz Kułan’s academic interests also include the American penitentiary system, in particular the history of the prison on Alcatraz Island. To this end, in 2018 he conducted an archival search in San Bruno, California (USA), where he was on a research trip.
